What would you do with help from 10,000 volunteers? Would you scour a complex data set, quickly explore many out-of-the-way places, or simply harness the creativity of that many unique human minds? That’s what citizen science is all about: imagining new possibilities, solving hard problems, and at the same time, sharing your love of science far and wide. I’ll give an overview of NASA’s citizen science program, tell the stories of remarkable citizen scientists and citizen science projects, and share best practices gleaned from the NASA community.
About Marc Kuchner
Dr. Marc Kuchner is the Citizen Science Officer for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, looking after 25 NASA citizen science projects that connect more than 1.5 million volunteer scientists around the world. An astrophysicist, Kuchner began his work on cit sci as the PI of both the Disk Detective project and the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 project. These projects discovered the Peter Pan disk phenomenon, the first extreme T subdwarfs, and most of the known ultracool brown dwarfs, and won the Robert H Goddard award for scientific achievement.
