WISE Survey Capturing the Whole Sky in Infrared Light
图像
图注: This image presents the entire sky mapped in infrared light from space by the WISE satellite. While dust in the plane of the Milky Way blocks visible light, obscuring the heart of our Galaxy, infrared light passes through the dust. The most prominent feature is the broad, bright band running horizontally through the centre — this is the plane of our Milky Way galaxy. Numerous brighter knots and patches appear above and below the band, marking regions of active star formation and nearby galaxies.
Such a dataset is a classic example of an astronomical survey, in which large portions of the sky is scanned to build a comprehensive catalogue of cosmic sources. The WISE satellite operated in space, allowing it to study parts of the infrared spectrum blocked by Earth's atmosphere.

SOFIA: Unveiling the Infrared Universe from the Skies
图像
图注: This image shows the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) telescope. This telescope which operated from 2010 to 2022 was mounted in a modified Boeing 747 aircraft with a section of the rear fuselage removed to allow the telescope to observe the sky and with other modifications that allow it to fly at a higher altitude than a standard 747.
Many molecules which are common in the Earth's atmosphere (such as water, carbon dioxide and methane) absorb radiation at infrared wavelengths. This interferes with infrared observations made from the ground. SOFIA flew at an altitude that puts it above most of the water vapour in the Earth's atmosphere, greatly reducing the impact of absorption by water molecules on its observations.

Astronauts working outside the ISS
图像
图注: In this image, astronauts Robert L. Curbeam (USA) and Christer Fuglesang (Sweden) are seen working outside the International Space Station (ISS), visible against the backdrop of the Earth with New Zealand visible below. They are attaching a truss segment to the ISS to keep it rigid and to route electricity and liquid coolants. Extending over 15 meters and weighing more than 10,000 kilograms, these trusses are not easy objects to work with, especially outside of a space station. The astronauts are wearing large white spacesuits and are attached to the hull of the ISS to ensure they do not drift off into space.

Infrared Reentry Analysis: Shuttle Orbiter Columbia
图像
图注: A composite image of the Space Shuttle Columbia's reentry, captured by NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The right hand side of the image was taken in infrared light with the left hand side taken in visible light. The image reveals the intense heating patterns encountered during descent. The temperature scale for the infrared image goes from violet at the coolest end to red at the hottest. We can see here that the wing and tail of the space shuttle are glowing the brightest, indicating that they are the hottest.
