Annular Solar Eclipse

图注： This image captures an annular eclipse, a special type of solar eclipse that occurs when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun but does not completely cover it. Because the Moon is near the farthest point in its orbit it has a smaller angular size than normal and is thus slightly smaller in the sky than the Sun. If an eclipse occurs in this situation, the Moon only blocks the central portion of the Sun's disk but leaves a bright ring, often called the “ring of fire”, visible around the Moon’s silhouette. An annular eclipse is different from a total solar eclipse in that observers see this luminous ring rather than the Sun being fully obscured.

Solar corona

图注： Solar corona composite during the totality of the April 8th, 2024 solar eclipse. Solar prominences are also visible on the right side edge. This image was processed using a Larson-Sekanina-style technique. Multiple exposures ranging from 1/500 second to 4 seconds were stacked and combined with a rotational gradient filter to reveal fine structural detail across the corona's extreme brightness range. This is done because the inner corona saturates at longer exposures, while the outer corona and the Moon are only visible at those same longer exposures. The 4-second exposure was excluded from this image, since only the Moon was captured in this frame.
