Glossar-Begriff: Geozentrisches Modell
Beschreibung: Frühe Modelle des Universums waren geozentrisch: Sie stellten die Erde in den Mittelpunkt des Kosmos, wobei sich Mond, Sonne und Planeten relativ zu den "Fixsternen" um sie herum bewegen. Geozentrische Modelle existierten in vielen Kulturen der Antike neben heliozentrischen Modellen, die die Sonne in den Mittelpunkt stellten. Ein einflussreiches geozentrisches Modell ist das Ptolemäische Weltbild (Epizykeltheorie), benannt nach Claudius Ptolemäus, einem Astronomen aus dem 2. Jahrhundert. Es war mehr als tausend Jahre lang in Europa, Nordafrika und dem Nahen Osten das wichtigste Modell des Kosmos. Gegen Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts begann eine Verschiebung hin zum heliozentrischen Modell, das gemeinhin mit dem Namen Nikolaus Kopernikus verbunden wird. Heute wissen wir, dass das Sonnensystem nur eines von vielen Planetensystemen ist und keineswegs das Zentrum des Universums. In der Praxis werden geozentrische Beschreibungen des Himmels nach wie vor verwendet - allerdings nur, um zu berechnen, wo welche astronomischen Objekte von einem bestimmten Ort aus zu einer bestimmten Zeit sichtbar sind.

A Geocentric chart from 1568
Unterschrift: This map, created in 1568 by the Portuguese cartographer Bartolomeu Velho, depicts the worldview of the time, when many scholars believed in a geocentric model of the cosmos — the idea that Earth sits at the centre of the Universe with the Sun, Moon, the five planets known at the time, and stars moving around it. Although primarily a navigational chart, the design and layout of this map were influenced by astronomical understanding rooted in geocentric thinking.
The geocentric model was widely accepted for many centuries, especially in Europe, based on interpretations of celestial motions and philosophical traditions that placed Earth at the centre. It was only later, with observations by astronomers such as, Galileo Galilei, that this model was replaced by the heliocentric model, which places the Sun at the centre of the Solar System.
