Description: Wasserstoff ist das häufigste und leichteste Element im Universum. Es hat die geringste Kernladung, da es nur ein Proton besitzt. Wenn Wasserstoffatome angeregt werden, zum Beispiel durch die Strahlung eines nahen heißen Sterns, senden sie Licht in charakteristischen schmalen Bereichen des elektromagnetischen Spektrums aus. Mithilfe dieser Wasserstoff-Emissionslinien kann atomarer Wasserstoff im Weltraum entdeckt werden. Insbesondere die H-Alpha-Linie mit ihrer satten roten Farbe lässt Wasserstoffwolken in astronomischen Bildern in leuchtendem Rot erscheinen. Mit der 21-cm-Linie (auch HI-Linie oder Wasserstofflinie) lassen sich große Gaswolken mit Radioteleskopen aufzeichnen.
