Description: Der Begriff Photon stammt aus dem Griechischen phōs, was Licht bedeutet, und wird daher synonym und austauschbar mit Licht verwendet. Wenn Astronomen von Licht sprechen, meinen sie damit alle Arten von elektromagnetischer Strahlung, von Radiowellen bis hin zu Gammastrahlen.

Ein Photon ist ein Elementarteilchen, Träger der elektromagnetischen Kraft und gilt als das kleinste Paket (Quantum) elektromagnetischer Energie. Die mit einem Photon einer bestimmten Frequenz verbundenen Energiequanten sind proportional zu dieser Frequenz und umgekehrt proportional zu seiner Wellenlänge.

Nach moderner Auffassung ist ein Photon nicht nur ein Teilchen, sondern auch eine Welle. In der Astronomie sind Photonen die Grundlage für unsere Fähigkeit, verschiedene Aspekte des Universums und der darin enthaltenen Objekte zu beobachten und zu messen.
