Description: Proxima Centauri, auch bekannt als Alpha Centauri C, ist der sonnennächste Stern in einer Entfernung von 4,24 Lichtjahren (1,302 Parsec) oder etwa 40 Billionen Kilometer. Er ist ein Roter Zwerg, kleiner als die Sonne in Größe und Masse und daher zu lichtschwach, um mit dem bloßen Auge gesehen zu werden. Zum Zeitpunkt der Erstellung dieses Eintrags gibt es einen bestätigten Planeten, der Proxima Centauri umkreist: Proxima Centauri b. Seine Umlaufbahn befindet sich in der sogenannten habitablen Zone des Sterns. Zwei weitere Kandidaten für Planeten, Proxima Centauri c und d, sind noch nicht bestätigt worden. Zusammen mit Alpha Centauri A und B bildet Proxima Centauri das Alpha-Centauri-Sternsystem, das aus insgesamt drei über die Schwerkraft aneinander gebundenen Sternen besteht.
