Description: La zona horaria, en la que se encuentra el histórico Observatorio Real de Greenwich (Gran Bretaña), se denomina zona del meridiano de Greenwich o, alternativamente, zona horaria de Europa Occidental. Históricamente, la hora media de Greenwich (GMT) era la hora solar media determinada en el Observatorio Real, y utilizada como punto de referencia para los cronómetros navales que se llevaban en los barcos. Los navegantes determinaban la hora de su mediodía local (el punto más alto sobre el horizonte alcanzado por el Sol en un día determinado) mediante observaciones con un sextante, o un dispositivo similar, y la comparaban con la GMT que mostraba su cronómetro; la diferencia les permitía determinar su longitud geográfica. En el sistema moderno, la hora en el huso horario GMT corresponde al Tiempo Universal Coordinado (UTC), escrito como "UTC + 0h".
