Description: Les étoiles qui fusionnent de l'hélium au carbone dans leur cœur sont appelées étoiles de la branche horizontale. Ce nom vient du fait que ces étoiles se situent le long d'une branche horizontale du diagramme HR, présentant une gamme de températures de "surface" (températures effectives) mais une luminosité presque constante. Il s'agit d'étoiles qui ont évolué au-delà de la phase de géante rouge et qui ont perdu des quantités variables de masse (couches externes). Les étoiles de la séquence principale dont la masse peut atteindre huit fois celle du Soleil peuvent passer par cette phase d'évolution.
