Glossary term: Poussière
Description: Contrairement à ce qui se passe sur Terre, les grains de poussière dans l'espace lointain sont très petits, la plupart d'entre eux ayant une taille inférieure à un millième de millimètre. Ils constituent un élément important du milieu entre les étoiles, appelé milieu interstellaire. Ils se forment dans différents environnements, tels que les couches externes de certaines étoiles géantes froides ou de supernovae, et sont dispersés dans l'espace lorsque ces étoiles commencent à perdre de la masse. Elles sont principalement composées de silicates, de composés de carbone et de traces d'autres éléments. Elles peuvent être recouvertes de glace dans les régions froides et denses du milieu interstellaire. Ils sont principalement responsables de l'extinction interstellaire de la lumière des étoiles qui nous parvient.
