Description: L'idrogeno è l'elemento più abbondante e più leggero dell'Universo; ha la carica nucleare più piccola in quanto ha un solo protone. Quando gli atomi di idrogeno sono eccitati, ad esempio dalla radiazione di una stella calda vicina, emettono luce in regioni strette e caratteristiche dello spettro. Queste linee di emissione dell'idrogeno possono essere utilizzate per rilevare l'idrogeno atomico; in particolare la linea alfa dell'idrogeno, con il suo colore rosso intenso, fa sì che le nubi di idrogeno appaiano in uno splendido rosso nelle immagini astronomiche; e la linea dell'idrogeno a 21 cm, che può essere utilizzata per mappare grandi nubi di gas utilizzando i radiotelescopi.
