Glossary term: Astronomia
Description: L'astronomia è una delle scienze più antiche e riguarda lo studio dei corpi celesti nel cielo, come stelle, pianeti, galassie, meteore e meteoriti. Studia anche l'atmosfera per confrontare il pianeta Terra con i pianeti vicini. In passato, l'astronomia si occupava di tracciare le posizioni del Sole, della Luna e dei pianeti ai fini del calendario e della navigazione. Gli astronomi contemporanei studiano anche i fenomeni fisici che regolano la formazione e il comportamento degli oggetti astronomici.
Nell'antichità l'astronomia era spesso strettamente legata alla pseudo-scienza dell'astrologia, e ancora oggi molte persone non conoscono la differenza tra le due discipline.
L'astronomia è una delle poche scienze in cui i dilettanti possono svolgere un ruolo importante, dato che gli astronomi dilettanti hanno contribuito a molte importanti scoperte.
