Glossary term: Stella di tipo O
Description: Una stella di tipo spettrale "O". Gli astronomi identificano le stelle di tipo O dalla presenza di righe di assorbimento dell'elio ionizzato nei loro spettri. Hanno temperature (effettive) tipiche comprese tra circa 10.000 kelvin (K) e 30.000 K. Rispetto alle altre stelle, appaiono di colore bianco-bluastro agli occhi umani, a meno che non vi sia un arrossamento interstellare o atmosferico significativo. Le stelle di tipo O sono le più calde e le più blu delle principali classificazioni spettrali. Le stelle di tipo O sulla sequenza principale hanno le masse più elevate (superiori a circa 15 masse solari), una vita di combustione dell'idrogeno più breve e, di conseguenza, si trovano soprattutto nelle regioni di formazione stellare e nelle loro vicinanze.
