Glossary term: Pleiadi
Description: Le Pleiadi sono un ammasso di stelle nella costellazione del Toro. Un ammasso aperto di oltre mille stelle, le Pleiadi si trovano a circa 440 anni luce dalla Terra. Le Pleiadi sono relativamente giovani su scale astronomiche, con un'età stimata tra i 70 e i 150 milioni di anni. Da sei a nove membri delle Pleiadi sono visibili a occhio nudo nella maggior parte delle condizioni.
Le Pleiadi, in quanto ammasso stellare di rilievo, sono associate a una grande quantità di mitologia e folklore nella cultura di tutto il mondo. La loro prima apparizione nel cielo mattutino è un importante indicatore nei calendari di diverse società, tra cui la segnalazione del Capodanno Māori. Il nome "Pleiadi" deriva dalla leggenda greca associata all'ammasso.
