Glossary term: Costellazione
Description: Una costellazione, in termini tecnici moderni, è un segmento poligonale della sfera celeste. L'Unione Astronomica Internazionale ha suddiviso l'intera sfera celeste in 88 regioni - costellazioni. Questa suddivisione si basa su quelle utilizzate nell'Antica Grecia e su aggiunte più recenti, soprattutto nell'emisfero meridionale. Ognuna delle 88 costellazioni occupa una certa parte del cielo e quindi ogni corpo celeste, dalle stelle alle galassie alle nebulose, ecc. può essere associato ad una costellazione. Lo Zodiaco è costituito da 13 costellazioni che si sovrappongono all'eclittica (il percorso annuale tracciato dal Sole attraverso la sfera celeste). Le 13 costellazioni sono: Ofiuco, Sagittario, Capricorno, Acquario, Pesci, Ariete, Toro, Gemelli, Cancro, Leone, Vergine, Bilancia e Scorpione.
Le costellazioni contengono raggruppamenti di stelle (asterismi) che visti dalla Terra suggeriscono degli schemi. Questi schemi rappresentano in maniera fantasiosa esseri umani, animali, o altri oggetti riconoscibili.
