Glossary term: Inteligência extraterrestre
Description: Inteligência extraterrestre se refere à possível existência de entidades inteligentes além das existentes na Terra.
As buscas por inteligência extraterrestre incluíram a procura por sinais de rádio ou outros sinais, mas grande parte das pesquisas atuais está centrada em determinar se as condições para a vida inteligente estão presentes em outros lugares. De acordo com as evidências disponíveis, as condições necessárias para o surgimento da vida na Terra - um planeta sólido, a uma distância de sua estrela em que a água líquida possa existir na superfície do planeta, átomos como carbono e oxigênio e as condições para formar moléculas mais complexas - devem existir em vários outros planetas em nossa galáxia e além dela. Não é uma suposição irracional que a vida inteligente possa ter surgido pelo menos em alguns desses planetas, embora não tenhamos uma base sólida para estimar a probabilidade de isso acontecer.
Alguns astrônomos usaram sinais de rádio para procurar possíveis mensagens como parte da Busca por Inteligência Extraterrestre (SETI). A velocidade da luz como um limite físico fundamental significa que as viagens interestelares levariam muito tempo, limitando a capacidade de entrarmos em contato direto com inteligências extraterrestres.
