Glossary term: Constelação
Description: Uma constelação, em termos técnicos modernos, é um segmento poligonal da esfera celeste. A União Astronômica Internacional dividiu toda a esfera celeste em 88 regiões — constelações. Esta divisão inclui aquelas usadas na Grécia Antiga, juntamente com adições mais recentes, especialmente no hemisfério sul. Cada uma das 88 constelações ocupa uma determinada parte do céu e, portanto, cada um dos corpos celestes, de estrelas a galáxias, nebulosas, etc., pode ser associado a uma constelação. O Zodíaco contém 13 constelações atravessadas pela eclíptica (o caminho anual traçado pelo Sol na esfera celeste). As 13 constelações do Zodíaco são: Ofiúco, Sagitário, Capricórnio, Aquário, Peixes, Áries, Touro, Gêmeos, Câncer, Leão, Virgem, Libra e Escorpião.
As constelações contêm agrupamentos de estrelas (asterismos) que sugerem um padrão visto da Terra. Esses padrões são descritos de forma imaginativa como uma representação de seres humanos, animais ou outros objetos reconhecíveis.
