Glossary term: 伽马射线

Also known as γ 射线,伽玛射线

Description: 伽马射线光子是电磁波谱中能量最高的光子,用希腊字母“γ”表示。伽马射线光子的能量一般大于 100 千电子伏,是可见光光子能量的 50,000 多倍,频率约为 3x1019 赫兹或更高,波长小于 10 皮米(1 皮米等于 10-12 米)。

在地球上,伽马射线可由某些放射性核素的原子核在放射性衰变后发出。在天文学中,伽马射线可由最极端的超新星以伽马射线暴的形式发出,也可由活动星系核(如耀变体)以及太阳耀斑发出。

天体源所发出的伽马射线无法到达地球表面。因此,要研究伽马射线天文,就必须将探测器发射到地球大气层之外。
