Description: 伽馬射線光子是電磁波譜中能量最高的光子,用希臘字母“γ”表示。伽馬射線光子的能量一般大於 100 千電子伏,是可見光光子能量的 50,000 多倍,頻率約為 3x1019 赫茲或更高,波長小於 10 皮米(1 皮米等於 10-12 米)。

在地球上,伽馬射線可由某些放射性核素的原子核在放射性衰變後發出。在天文學中,伽馬射線可由最極端的超新星以伽馬射線暴的形式發出,也可由活動星系核(如耀變體)以及太陽耀斑發出。

天體源所發出的伽馬射線無法到達地球表面。因此,要研究伽馬射線天文,就必須將探測器發射到地球大氣層之外。
