Glossary term: 巨行星
Description: 巨行星是主要由氫、氦,或水、甲烷,或氨等更復雜的分子組成的巨大天體。類地行星主要由鐵或岩石等沸點很高的物質組成,而巨行星則被認為有一個被其他物質包圍的固態內核。巨行星的質量遠遠大於地球,因此其引力足夠強大,可以維持由氫和氦等輕元素組成的擴展氣態大氣層。
巨行星分為兩類:氣態巨行星和冰質巨行星,前者主要由氫和氦組成,而後者主要由水、甲烷和氨組成,周圍環繞著氫和氦組成的大氣層。這兩個名稱可能會引起混淆,因為氣態巨行星中的大部分物質並不是氣態的,而冰質巨行星包含的也並不是固態冰,而是先在寒冷的外太陽系中凍結、後被吸積到行星上的物質。
太陽系中最大的四顆行星(木星、土星、海王星和天王星)都是巨行星。
