Glossary term: 質量

Description: 質量是一個物體所含物質的總量。構成物體的原子的數量、類型和密度共同決定了物體的質量。在日常用語中,質量和重量這兩個概念經常被相互替換,但在物理學中,它們其實並不相同。質量在任何位置都保持不變,而重量則取決於當地的引力場。

質量有兩種概念:“引力質量”和“慣性質量”。其中,“慣性質量”是物質抵抗運動狀態變化的特性,它即是牛頓第二定律中的質量。我們看到,加速度與質量成反比。因此,在給定力的作用下,質量越大的物體加速度越小。

“引力質量”則是物質產生並受到引力的特性,質量越大的物體所受到的引力越大。

愛因斯坦通過他的“等效原理”斷言,引力質量和慣性質量是完全相同的。這是物理學中的一個基本概念。
