Description: 當宇宙氣體雲坍縮形成恆星時,這顆新生恆星被一個由氣體和塵埃組成的漩渦盤所包圍。這就是行星形成的原行星盤:被冰覆蓋的塵埃粒子會相互粘連,形成稍大的團塊,並繼續增大。至於接下來會發生什麼,還有一些問題還尚未解決:例如,湍流氣體運動在拉近這些團塊之間的距離方面起著什麼作用?但最終結果是,塵埃粒子會形成大小超過一公裡的所謂 "小行星"。其中一些被自身的引力拉到一起,形成更大的行星,另一些則留下來,成為第一顆小行星。一些原行星設法將大量氣體吸向它們,成為氣態巨行星。還有一些原行星位於遠離中心恆星的寒冷區域,它們會與氣體一起吸積大量的冰凍物質,成為冰巨行星。其他一些氣體較少的原行星則會成為陸地行星。
