Description: “矮星”是所謂主序星的同義詞：這些恆星在其內核中將氫聚變成氦。恆星的大部分“生命”都是在矮星階段度過的。我們的太陽就是一顆中年矮星。通常情況下，天文學家在提到這類主序星時，還會提到它們的顏色，比如“紅矮星”指的是最常見的小質量矮星，而“黃矮星”指的是像太陽這樣的恆星。
注意：在天文學中，有些情況下“矮星”這個詞指的並不是如上定義的天體！褐矮星是質量小於太陽質量的8%、內核從未開始穩定氫聚變的天體，它們是介於恆星和行星質量範圍之間的一種中間類“亞恆星天體”。白矮星是中低質量恆星耗盡核燃料後的緻密殘餘物。當我們的太陽到達其恆星壽命的終點時，它就會變成一顆白矮星。
