Description: Der Begriff heliozentrisch leitet sich vom griechischen helios, dem Namen für die Sonne, und kentro, dem Zentrum, ab. Dieses Modell stellt die Sonne in den Mittelpunkt des Sonnensystems, wo sie von den Planeten umkreist wird. Dieses Modell ersetzt das geozentrische (erdzentrierte) Modell, in dem die Erde im Mittelpunkt steht. Obwohl der Ursprung dieses Modells Kopernikus im 16. Jahrhundert zugeschrieben wird, entwickelte bereits der Philosoph Aristarchos von Samos im antiken Griechenland ein heliozentrisches Modell. Auch Astronomen in Indien, Europa und der islamischen Welt diskutierten solche Modelle bereits vor Kopernikus. Galilei beobachtete die Venus mit Teleskopen und lieferte so Beweise für das heliozentrische Modell. Das ursprüngliche heliozentrische Modell stellte die Sonne in den geometrischen Mittelpunkt des Sonnensystems. Diese Ansicht änderte sich mit den mathematischen Formulierungen Keplers unter Verwendung der Daten von Tycho Brahe. Newton baute auf diesen Erkenntnissen auf und erweiterte sie mit seinem Gravitationsgesetz.
