Description: Ein Infrarotteleskop beobachtet infrarotes Licht und wird für die Infrarotastronomie verwendet. Infrarotteleskope können sich auf der Erde oder im Weltraum befinden. Bei Observatorien auf der Erde sind die Beobachtungsmöglichkeiten begrenzt: Das liegt an der Absorption von Infrarotlicht durch die Erdatmosphäre, an Infrarotlicht, das die Erdatmosphäre selbst emittiert und sogar an der Infrarotstrahlung (Wärmestrahlung) des Teleskops und seiner Umgebung. Infrarotteleskope im Weltraum befinden sich jenseits der Erdatmosphäre und können von der Sonne abgeschirmt und gekühlt werden, wodurch die vom Teleskop ausgehende Infrarotstrahlung reduziert wird.
