Description: Eine Nova ist ein Stern, der plötzlich um ein Vielfaches heller als zuvor wird. Der Name leitet sich vom lateinischen Begriff "nova stella"(neuer Stern) ab, der im Europa der Frühneuzeit verwendet wurde, um helle Sterne zu beschreiben, die plötzlich am Himmel erschienen. Novae wurden von vielen verschiedenen Kulturen als "Gaststerne" beobachtet.

Novae werden durch Weiße Zwerge verursacht, die Gas von einem nahen Doppelsternbegleiter ansammeln. Dieses Gas sammelt sich in der Atmosphäre des Weißen Zwerges an, bis es heiß genug ist, um sich durch Kernfusion zu entzünden. Dieser nukleare Feuerball führt dazu, dass der Weiße Zwerg um mehrere Größenordnungen heller wird. Anders als bei einer Supernova vom Typ Ia bleibt der Weiße Zwerg nach dieser Explosion intakt. Das bedeutet, dass der gesamte Prozess erneut beginnen und die Nova sich wiederholen kann.
