Description: Plasma ist ein ionisiertes Gas, das aus positiven Ionen und negativen Elektronen besteht. Plasmen sind quasineutral: Im Mittel sind die Dichten von positiven und negativen Ladungen gleich groß. Die Eigenschaften des Plasmas unterscheiden sich so sehr von denen gewöhnlicher neutraler Gase, dass Plasma als "vierter Aggregatzustand" angesehen wird. Plasma kann sich bei hohen Temperaturen (wie in Sternen) oder durch Photoionisation (wie in interstellarem Gas) bilden. Plasma findet sich im interstellaren Medium, im interplanetaren Medium in Form des Sonnenwindes, in der Magnetosphäre der Planeten und im intergalaktischen Medium. Es wird geschätzt, dass 99 Prozent der Materie im beobachtbaren Universum im Zustand eines Plasmas ist.
