Description: Triton ist der größte Mond des Planeten Neptun. Er ist größer als der Zwergplanet Pluto. Aufgrund seiner ungewöhnlichen Umlaufbahn und nach dem, was wir über seine Zusammensetzung wissen, könnte es sich bei Triton sogar um einen von Neptun eingefangenen Zwergplaneten handeln. Triton ist ein Eismond mit einer Kruste aus Wassereis, die von einer Schicht aus gefrorenem Stickstoff bedeckt ist, mit einem Kern aus größtenteils silikatischem Gestein. Voyager 2 ist bislang die einzige Raumsonde, die Triton besucht hat. Sie hat entdeckt, dass der Mond geologisch aktiv ist, mit Geysiren, die Stickstoffgas ausstoßen, und sehr wahrscheinlich mit Eisvulkanen ("Kryovulkanen") - analog zu den Vulkanen der Erde, aber mit Wasser und Ammoniak anstelle von verflüssigtem Gestein.
