Description: A finales de la década de los 90, las mediciones de la luz emitida por las supernovas de tipo Ia (una clase de estrella en explosión), situadas en galaxias muy lejanas, mostraron que parecían más débiles de lo esperado para un universo con una tasa (velocidad) de expansión constante. Las mediciones eran coherentes con la hipótesis de un universo en el que el ritmo de expansión se estuviera acelerando. La causa de la expansión acelerada se atribuye a la energía oscura, cuya naturaleza aún se desconoce y es un tema de investigación actual. La expansión acelerada ocurre a escalas muy grandes y no tiene efectos significativos en galaxias individuales gravitacionalmente unidas.
