Glossary term: Galaxie irrégulière
Description: Une galaxie irrégulière est un type de galaxie présentant peu ou pas de symétrie (elle a une morphologie ou une forme quelconque). Elles sont généralement plus petites que les galaxies spirales et elliptiques et contiennent souvent des quantités importantes de gaz avec des étoiles en formation. Les Grand et Petit Nuages de Magellan sont des galaxies irrégulières, relativement proches (environ 160 000 années-lumière et 200 000 années-lumière) de notre Voie lactée, qui peuvent être observées à l'œil nu depuis l'hémisphère Sud de la Terre.
