Description: Un vaisseau spatial est un véhicule construit pour voyager dans l'espace. La propulsion est généralement assurée par une sorte de moteur, qui émet du gaz ou du plasma dans une direction afin d'accélérer dans la direction opposée. Les engins spatiaux qui ne transportent pas d'êtres humains sont appelés engins spatiaux robotisés ou sans équipage ; il s'agit par exemple de divers types de satellites, de télescopes spatiaux ou de sondes spatiales utilisés à des fins d'exploration. Les engins spatiaux avec équipage, quant à eux, doivent assurer la survie de leurs occupants humains, avec, par exemple, une atmosphère pressurisée, une protection contre les radiations et une température régulée. Les engins spatiaux qui peuvent revenir sur Terre sont dits récupérables ; ceux qui peuvent être relancés après récupération sont dits réutilisables. Un engin spatial conçu pour servir de base d'accueil à plus long terme, par exemple en orbite terrestre, est appelé station spatiale.
