Glossary term: Pléiades
Description: Les Pléiades sont un amas d'étoiles dans la constellation du Taureau. Amas ouvert de plus d'un millier d'étoiles, les Pléiades se trouvent à environ 440 années-lumière de la Terre. Les Pléiades sont relativement jeunes avec un âge estimé entre 70 et 150 millions d'années. Entre six et neuf membres des Pléiades sont visibles à l'œil nu dans la plupart des conditions.
En tant qu'amas stellaire de premier plan, les Pléiades sont associées à une multitude de mythes et de folklores provenant de cultures du monde entier. Sa première apparition dans le ciel du matin est un repère important dans les calendriers de divers civilisations, notamment pour signaler le Nouvel An Māori. Le nom "Pléiades" provient de la légende grecque associée à l'amas.
