Glossary term: Chandelle standard
Description: Une chandelle standard est un objet astronomique dont la luminosité (énergie émise par unité de temps) est connue et peut être utilisée pour estimer la distance entre l'objet et la Terre.
Pour la plupart des objets célestes, les astronomes ne disposent pas d'informations sur leur distance par rapport à la Terre. Dans ces conditions, il peut être difficile de déterminer si l'on observe un objet lointain, mais très lumineux, ou un objet plus proche et moins lumineux - la luminosité apparente, mesurée depuis la Terre, peut être la même dans les deux cas. Les chandelles standards ont une luminosité qui peut être estimée sans connaître leur distance. La distance de la chandelle standard peut alors être calculée en comparant cette luminosité et l'éclat apparent de l'objet dans le ciel nocturne. Parmi les exemples importants, citons les variables céphéides (étoiles pulsantes pour lesquelles il existe une relation entre la période de pulsation et la luminosité) et les supernovae de type Ia (explosions stellaires brillantes pour lesquelles il existe une relation entre la luminosité maximale et l'échelle de temps sur laquelle l'éclat diminue immédiatement après).
