Description: Il disco galattico è la componente discoidale della Via Lattea che contiene stelle, gas e polveri in moto circolare complanare attorno al centro galattico. Il disco galattico è molto sottile rispetto al suo diametro, che è di circa 100.000 anni luce. A volte viene diviso in due componenti: il disco sottile, spesso circa 1000 anni luce, e il disco spesso, spesso circa 5000 anni luce. Se il disco spesso sia una componente separata della galassia o un'estensione del disco sottile è oggetto di dibattito tra gli astronomi. Il disco sottile ha quattro bracci a spirale dove il tasso di formazione stellare è relativamente alto. Il disco è circondato da un grande alone galattico.

Sebbene la Via Lattea sia ben studiata, la sua struttura precisa è ancora oggetto di dibattito, soprattutto in prossimità del nucleo, dove la grande densità di stelle e l'assorbimento dovuto alla materia interstellare rendono difficile lo studio.

Molte altre galassie, tra cui quelle a spirale e lenticolari, hanno i loro dischi galattici.
