Glossary term: Galassia
Description: Una galassia è un sistema gravitazionalmente legato costituito da stelle e da altre componenti di materia, quali materia oscura, gas e polvere. Le galassie sono tipicamente distanti tra loro alcune centinaia di migliaia di anni luce, e possono avere forme e dimensioni diverse. Le più piccole contengono solo poche migliaia di stelle, mentre le più grandi possono ospitarne anche qualche decina di migliaia di miliardi. Il termine "Galassia" con la lettera maiuscola si riferisce solitamente alla nostra galassia, la Via Lattea, che conta circa 100-400 miliardi di stelle.
