Description: Variazione ciclica di circa 11 anni del numero di macchie solari che si formano sul Sole, corrispondente a una variazione dell'attività solare. Un nuovo ciclo di macchie solari inizia dopo un periodo di minimo solare, quando il Sole ha poche o nessuna macchia solare. All'inizio di un nuovo ciclo di macchie solari, le macchie si formano a latitudini di circa +/- 30 gradi (nord o sud) dall'equatore del Sole. Man mano che il ciclo prosegue, si formano nuove macchie solari alle latitudini più vicine all'equatore solare. Dopo un po' di tempo il numero di macchie solari che si formano diminuisce quando il ciclo passa dal massimo solare al minimo solare, il che indica la fine del ciclo.
