Glossary term: Grande Carro
Description: Il Grande Carro è un noto schema stellare (o asterismo, per usare il termine tecnico) che fa parte della costellazione dell'Orsa Maggiore nel cielo settentrionale. È composto da sette stelle: Alkaid, Mizar, Alioth, Megrez, Phecda, Merak e Dubhe. Le stelle finali nella coppa del Carro possono essere utilizzate per individuare la Stella Polare (Polaris). Il fatto che le sette stelle siano simili per luminosità lo rende particolarmente notevole (anche se Megrez è leggermente più debole delle altre), ed è stato conosciuto con vari nomi in molte culture. Le cinque stelle centrali fanno parte di un ammasso di stelle (Collinder 285 o ammasso dell'Orsa Maggiore), che si muovono insieme nello spazio. Mizar è in realtà una stella doppia; la sua compagna è Alcor. Dubhe è rossastra, le altre sei stelle sono bianche.
