Glossary term: Orione
Description: Orione è una costellazione facilmente riconoscibile, situata in prossimità dell'equatore celeste. Nell'emisfero settentrionale è un'importante costellazione invernale, mentre nell'emisfero meridionale è una costellazione estiva di rilievo. Nel mito greco, Orione era un cacciatore, e le stelle principali della costellazione sono solitamente interpretate come rappresentanti le spalle di Orione, la sua cintura, la spada che pende dalla sua cintura e i suoi due piedi. La maggior parte di queste stelle sono giganti o super-giganti blu, cioè stelle bluastre particolarmente luminose nelle ultime fasi della vita stellare. La stella della spalla sinistra, Betelgeuse, è una super-gigante rossa, cioè una stella rossa molto luminosa nella fase finale della sua vita. Il suo colore rossastro è facilmente visibile nel cielo notturno. La spada di Orione contiene la nebulosa di Orione. Vista a occhio nudo, è una macchia biancastra. I telescopi astronomici hanno dimostrato che si tratta di una nube rossa e brillante di idrogeno gassoso, dove stanno nascendo nuove stelle.
