Description: Una galassia nana è una galassia di piccole dimensioni che è insolitamente debole a causa delle sue dimensioni molto ridotte, o della sua luminosità superficiale molto bassa, o di entrambe. In genere, le galassie nane sono luminose al massimo un miliardo di volte la luminosità solare, pari a meno dell'uno per cento della luminosità della nostra galassia, la Via Lattea. Esistono numerosi tipi di galassie nane, tra cui le ellittiche nane, le sferoidi nane, le spirali nane e le galassie irregolari nane. Uno degli esempi più importanti di galassie nane è la Piccola Nube di Magellano, che è un satellite nano irregolare della nostra galassia, la Via Lattea.
