Description: Vários processos na astronomia são cíclicos: Eles se repetem regularmente. Um exemplo é a órbita de um planeta ao redor do Sol, com o planeta orbitando o Sol ao longo da mesma trajetória várias vezes. O tempo que leva entre uma repetição de tal ciclo e a próxima é chamado de período do ciclo. O período orbital de um planeta, por exemplo, é o tempo que o planeta leva para dar uma volta ao redor do Sol. A repetição não precisa ser perfeita, e os períodos orbitais podem mudar lentamente com o tempo. Por exemplo, a ligeira diminuição sistemática no período da primeira estrela binária de nêutrons forneceu a primeira evidência indireta da emissão de ondas gravitacionais.
