Description: Um pulsar é uma estrela de nêutrons que gira rapidamente e cujos fortes campos magnéticos produzem dois intensos feixes de radiação em direções opostas. Essa radiação pode ser detectada como um breve pulso por radiotelescópios quando passa por nossa linha de visada. Os pulsares têm cerca de 10 a 20 quilômetros de diâmetro e uma massa típica de cerca de uma vez e meia a do nosso Sol. Eles giram cerca de uma a várias centenas de vezes por segundo e podem funcionar como relógios celestes muito precisos. Alguns pulsares foram detectados como fontes de raios gama ou de raios X. Mais de 3000 foram detectados em nossa galáxia. Além disso, cerca de 30 deles também foram detectados fora da Via Láctea, nas Nuvens de Magalhães. Os pulsares são úteis para o estudo do meio interestelar, como um teste da relatividade geral e potencialmente úteis para a detecção de ondas gravitacionais geradas por fusões de buracos negros.
