Glossary term: Órion
Description: Órion é uma constelação facilmente reconhecível perto do equador celestial. No hemisfério norte, é uma constelação proeminente de inverno; no hemisfério sul, é uma constelação proeminente de verão. No mito grego, Órion era um caçador, e as principais estrelas da constelação são normalmente interpretadas como representando os ombros de Órion, seu cinturão, a espada pendurada em seu cinturão e seus dois pés. A maioria dessas estrelas são gigantes azuis ou supergigantes, ou seja, estrelas azuladas particularmente brilhantes nos últimos estágios da vida estelar. A estrela do ombro esquerdo, Betelgeuse, é uma supergigante vermelha, ou seja, uma estrela vermelha muito brilhante no estágio final de sua vida. Sua cor avermelhada pode ser facilmente vista no céu noturno. A espada de Órion contém a nebulosa de Órion. Vista a olho nu, ela é uma mancha esbranquiçada. Os telescópios astronômicos mostraram que ela é uma nuvem vermelha brilhante de gás hidrogênio onde novas estrelas estão nascendo atualmente.
