Description: 天文学中的金属一词通常指除氢或氦以外的化学元素。宇宙大爆炸后不久,核合成产生了一个几乎完全是氢和氦的宇宙,只有微量的其他元素。随着时间的推移,恒星内核中的核聚变将其中一些氢和氦转化为碳、氧、氮和铁等较重的元素。这些新的较重元素通过巨星内部的缓慢核反应(慢中子俘获过程,s过程)以及超新星爆发和中子星碰撞中的快速核反应(快中子俘获过程,r过程)进一步转化,形成了我们今天所知的天然元素。恒星的金属含量(称为金属丰度)随着每一代恒星的诞生而增加。在我们的银河系中,最古老的恒星通常具有最低的金属丰度。
