Description: 天文学中的金属一词通常指除氢或氦以外的化学元素。宇宙大爆炸后不久，核合成产生了一个几乎完全是氢和氦的宇宙，只有微量的其他元素。随着时间的推移，恒星内核中的核聚变将其中一些氢和氦转化为碳、氧、氮和铁等较重的元素。这些新的较重元素通过巨星内部的缓慢核反应（慢中子俘获过程，s过程）以及超新星爆发和中子星碰撞中的快速核反应（快中子俘获过程，r过程）进一步转化，形成了我们今天所知的天然元素。恒星的金属含量（称为金属丰度）随着每一代恒星的诞生而增加。在我们的银河系中，最古老的恒星通常具有最低的金属丰度。
