Description: 隕石是指尺寸在30微米到1米之間,穿過地球或其他天體的大氣層後墜落到該天體表面的固態宇宙天體。一個天體只有在穿過地球或其他天體的大氣層後才被稱為隕石。處在行星際空間或穿過大氣層時,它被稱為流星體。流星體在大氣層中產生的激波會發光,此時我們就觀測到一顆流星。

隕石根據成分的不同,可分為石隕石、石鐵隕石和鐵隕石。在與觀測到的流星相對應的隕石中,石隕石是最常見的類型。不過,石隕石通常看起來像地球上的普通岩石,所以容易被忽視。而在地面上發現的隕石中,鐵隕石是最常見的類型。大多數隕石都是在南極洲或沙漠中發現的,因為那裡是最容易發現隕石的地方。

大多數被髮現的隕石質量從幾克到幾千克不等。已知最大的隕石是墜落在納米比亞的霍巴隕石,重達60多噸。有些隕石大到足以產生一個隕擊坑。隕石以其墜落的地點來命名。
