Description: 類星體是類恆星射電源的簡稱，是遙遠的河外射電源。類星體看起來像恆星（因此被稱為“類星”體），最初是用射電望遠鏡探測到的。觀測發現，類星體與星系中心質量最大的超大質量黑洞周圍區域有關。類星體是活動星系核（AGN）的一個子類，後者還包括射電星系、塞弗特星系、耀變體和低電離星系核（LINERs）等。類星體的亮度可能達到其宿主星系的百倍以上。有些類星體還有巨大的噴流，與宿主星系周圍和內部的氣體相互作用。由於類星體具有高亮度，因此它們可用來研究遙遠星系、居間星系和星系際介質。3C 273是第一個被探測到的類星體。
