Description: 天文學中的金屬一詞通常指除氫或氦以外的化學元素。宇宙大爆炸後不久,核合成產生了一個幾乎完全是氫和氦的宇宙,只有微量的其他元素。隨著時間的推移,恆星內核中的核聚變將其中一些氫和氦轉化為碳、氧、氮和鐵等較重的元素。這些新的較重元素通過巨星內部的緩慢核反應(慢中子俘獲過程,s過程)以及超新星爆發和中子星碰撞中的快速核反應(快中子俘獲過程,r過程)進一步轉化,形成了我們今天所知的天然元素。恆星的金屬含量(稱為金屬丰度)隨著每一代恆星的誕生而增加。在我們的銀河系中,最古老的恆星通常具有最低的金屬丰度。
