Description: 造父變星是一類脈動變星，其亮度的變化是由恆星外層週期性振盪引起的。它們以原型星——仙王座δ（Delta Cephei）命名。造父變星的一個重要特徵是它們的週期與亮度之間存在緊密的關係。這就是由亨麗埃塔·勒維特在1908年發現的著名的週期–光度關係。利用這一關係，可以根據造父變星的脈動週期計算出其絕對亮度。通過比較易於觀測的視亮度與從週期–光度關係中推導出的絕對亮度，可以確定該造父變星及其所在星系的距離。因此，造父變星是建立宇宙距離尺度的主要距離階梯。
