Glossary term: Fuerza electromagnética
Description: Siguiendo a Faraday y Maxwell en el siglo XIX, los físicos describen el espacio como lleno de campos eléctricos y magnéticos. Las cargas eléctricas en movimiento crean esos campos a su alrededor y, a su vez, el movimiento de una carga eléctrica se ve influido por los campos eléctrico y magnético en su posición. Una carga positiva será acelerada en la dirección del campo eléctrico, una carga negativa en la dirección opuesta; una carga eléctrica en movimiento será desviada perpendicularmente a su dirección de movimiento por un campo magnético. Estas dos influencias de campo sobre las cargas se denominan fuerzas electromagnéticas. Los objetos astronómicos, como las estrellas, las nubes de gas, las galaxias enteras o los discos de acreción arremolinados, tienen campos magnéticos a gran escala, donde estas fuerzas pueden llegar a ser importantes.
