Glossary term: Cadran solaire
Description: La position du Soleil dans le ciel a longtemps été utilisée pour définir le temps, le midi local étant le point où le Soleil est le plus haut au-dessus de l'horizon, et le jour étant défini au sens strict comme la période entre le lever et le coucher du Soleil, et au sens large comme le temps écoulé entre un midi local et le suivant. Un cadran solaire est un dispositif qui projette la direction du soleil sur une surface marquée, généralement en suivant l'ombre d'un pointeur allongé appelé "gnomon". Lorsque cette ombre pointe sur le repère "12", par exemple, il est 12 heures. Les cadrans solaires simples n'indiquent que l'heure solaire apparente, qui est directement liée à la position du soleil dans le ciel. Des versions plus élaborées comportent des dispositions particulières permettant de déterminer le temps solaire moyen.
