Description: L'horizon est la ligne qui sépare le ciel de la surface de la Terre. À n'importe quel endroit de la Terre, nous ne voyons qu'une partie limitée du globe. La limite entre ce que nous pouvons voir et ce que nous ne pouvons pas voir est communément appelée l'horizon. En astronomie, cette définition est précisée comme suit : Notre propre position sur Terre définit un plan horizontal, perpendiculaire à la verticale (que nous pouvons matérialiser par un fil à plomb). L'intersection de ce plan avec la sphère céleste définit notre horizon local astronomique. Le système de coordonnées horizontales utilise ce plan horizontal pour définir les positions dans le ciel. L'angle entre notre ligne de visée vers un objet céleste et le plan horizontal est appelé altitude de l'objet ; l'angle entre la projection de la ligne de visée sur ce plan et le nord vrai est appelé azimut de l'objet.
